Why Utility-Sorted Leads Matter in Deregulated Energy Markets

In energy choice states you sell utility by utility. A lead outside your territory is money down the drain.

How energy choice works

In deregulated states, people can buy their electricity or gas from a retail supplier instead of the utility. The utility still delivers it and looks after the wires and pipes. Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York and Texas all work this way, and there are others.

Suppliers don't sell everywhere

A supplier usually offers plans in some utility territories and not others, and the price is often different in each one. You might be selling in PECO territory in Pennsylvania but not PPL. A PPL customer can't become a sale for you, no matter how good your rep is.

What sorting by utility gets you

Once your leads are split by utility, you can:

  • Order only the territories your offers cover
  • Run a separate campaign per utility so each one has the right price
  • Stop paying for leads you can't sell to
  • Give door-to-door reps routes that stay inside approved areas

How we handle it

We match every lead to its utility and check that the utility actually serves that state. That last part matters more than you'd think. Vendors use short codes like "CE" or "DPL" that mean one utility in Ohio and a completely different one somewhere else, so we fix those.

You can see which utilities we have on our Energy Leads by State pages.
